A mixed-media work — acrylic and watercolor on watercolor paper — 29.5 × 42 cm. A large face fills the centre, built from layers of green, yellow, red and blue. Some of the facial lines are continuous and some break off, which is where the title comes from. It is a self-portrait made not in front of a mirror but out of an inner sense, and so it is less exact in detail and more exact about a state. The mixed technique moves between the transparency of watercolor and the opacity of acrylic, reinforcing the sense of a figure held between wholeness and fracture.
